How To Achieve A Work and Life Balance – Find Your Harmony
While this appears to be a little off topic from my normal articles, I felt that understanding balance in our daily activities was every bit as important and learning how to earn an income from the comfort of your home. And in reality, is even something that I feel is too important not to address early on.
Now this may not apply, in its entirety, to you, but bear with me.
Does it seem that all you have time for is work? You get up, go to your job and work, come home and work, eat (prepare a meal), sleep and do it all over again tomorrow.
Because life is not all about Work, though it appears to be. This is written to show you how to achieve a work and life balance while embracing the peace and harmony that you desire…just by making a few adjustments in your day.
What is Work?
According to dictionary.com work is defined as:
- exertion or effort directed to produce or accomplish something;
- labor; toil.productive or operative activity.
- employment, as in some form of industry, especially as a means of earning one’s livelihood:to look for work.
So according to this definition we work most of the time. We get up, make breakfast, shower and prepare for the day. Then either go to a job or take care of things around the house (caretaking). Run errands, prepare the evening meal, and so on. And in the middle of all this work, we’re trying to build an online business, possibly take care of children or parents, plus any other obligations that life throws at us.
So where’s the balance in that. I’m here to tell you this is only a perspective of what the day looks like (and a pretty simple one at that).
But I hope you get the point of which I am driving at. On the outside looking in, it appears that all there is to do is WORK!!
But how much of this Work do you actually enjoy? Do you like your paycheck job? Do you like raising your children? Do you like building your business?
I’m willing to bet that you answered at least two of those with an astounding yes, of course I do.
What is Life Balance?
Since we defined Work, it only seems fair to look at what life balance means, right? So according to dictionary. com:
- a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc.
- something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise.
So basically everything is equally distributed within your life. So that means that the work you perform in each part of your day is part of that balance. If you think about it, any time we exert ourselves it could be considered work. So the work balance is ensuring that what you do create a balance in your life.
Have you lost your mind?
Maybe, but stick with me.
When we get up in the morning and fix breakfast for the family, or just for ourselves, we are doing a healthy service to all who enjoy that breakfast.
When we take our shower before beginning our day, it refreshes us and prepares us physically to start the day.
Going to that day/night job may not be what we want to do, but we do the best job we can in order to make the time go by with at least a sliver of accomplishment, or maybe a lot. But at least there is a monetary paycheck that helps pay the bills.
Now lets not forget all the other areas of our day…that new business we’re trying to build, exercise, meditation (spiritual) time alone, social (family and friends).
There is a good chance that some of these overlap into the work part of your day, especially if you’re a stay-at-home parent. But do make sure to set aside a little special time with those you care most about. That few minutes can recharge your battery for the next task at hand.
What does your work and life balance look like?
So now its time to look at what starts your engine, what makes your soar, what makes you happy. In order to have any type of balance in your life, you have to know what makes you feel good.
Now if you don’t know the answer to what makes you feel good, I suggest you get a notepad right now. Stop reading this and write down the last thing you enjoyed doing and why you enjoyed it.
My reason for the above statement is that if you don’t know what makes you happy or what makes you do what you do every day and enjoy it, you (in my opinion) are lost. It is so important to know all the elements of your life before you try to create the balance you need to succeed in all areas of your life.
The work life balance ingredients
Basically there are four areas of your life that create balance…physical activity, spiritual or me time, social activities and self-productivity.
- Physical – exercise of some form (walking, the gym, dancing, etc) at least 10 minutes a day
- Spiritual (quiet time) – meditation, reading, yoga, etc. at least 10 minutes once a day
- Social – lunch with co-workers, date night, family night, Sunday dinner at least once per week
- Productivity – your job, your business, something that you can’t wait to start working on to help (bring in money) (save the whales) (save the children)…whatever makes you tick.
In conclusion, I want to encourage you to find the balance in your life. Balance affects everyone around you and generates a momentum of powerful energy that in essence can create anything that is desired.
